Para-badminton star Nithya Sre Sivan has earned an impressive collection of over 36 international medals, including a recent bronze at the Paris Paralympics. Despite facing constant teasing in school due to her short height, Nithya turned these challenges into victories.
“I still remember how my classmates made fun of me because of my height. But now, they all admire my success,” she shared with HT.
Growing up in a middle-class family in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, Nithya first found her love for sports while playing cricket with her brothers. Her interest in badminton developed gradually, but it was the 2016 Rio Olympics that truly sparked her competitive spirit. “I started admiring the game and the players,” she said.
After winning a silver medal in a district championship in 2018, Nithya was introduced to para-badminton through a colleague of her father, who was a state-level para-badminton player. This was a turning point in her life, and she set out to prove her critics wrong.
